How Motorised Blinds Work

A quiet Motomate motor does the work for you.

A small motor sits inside the blind's tube or curtain track and does the raising, lowering, opening and closing — so nothing needs pulling by hand. We fit Motomate motors, our own trademarked brand, which means we control the spec and support it directly rather than passing you to a supplier.

The Motomate motor

Housed inside the roller tube or track — protected from dust, and quiet enough for bedrooms. Indoor blinds take a 25mm or 35mm motor depending on the size of the blind.

Power options

Rechargeable battery (about 8 months between charges), a plug-in solar panel, or 240V hardwired by an electrician.

The Wi-Fi bridge

Every motor is remote controlled as standard. Add an optional Wi-Fi bridge and you can control your blinds from anywhere — one bridge handles up to 20 blinds.

The Connector App

A free app for iOS and Android. Group blinds by room, set schedules, and run everything from your phone or tablet.

Motomate motor options at a glance
Where Motor size Power Notes
Indoor blinds 25mm or 35mm Rechargeable battery Blinds over 2200mm wide generally need the 35mm motor
Indoor blinds 25mm or 35mm 240V hardwired Wired in by a licensed electrician (arranged by you)
Indoor blinds 25mm or 35mm Strip solar panel Low-light strip panel that keeps the battery topped up
Outdoor blinds 35mm 240V hardwired Wired in by a licensed electrician (arranged by you)
Outdoor blinds 35mm Plug-in solar panel IP-rated panel built for outdoor exposure

The right combination depends on your blind size, where it's going, available power and how you want to control it. That's what we work through with you at the measure — there's no single "best" setup, only the one that suits your place.

Benefits of Motorised Blinds for Gold Coast Homes

Built for how we live up here.

Everyday convenience

Every blind in the house, up or down, without walking room to room. Automatic blinds earn their keep the first busy morning.

Privacy on schedule

Set blinds to close at dusk so you're never the lit-up house on the street — whether you're home or not.

Sunlight & glare control

Cut glare on screens and TVs, and protect furniture and flooring from harsh Queensland sun through the middle of the day.

Heat reduction

Schedule blinds to close before the afternoon sun hits, so the house isn't already hot when you walk in. Less work for the aircon.

High & hard-to-reach windows

Stairwell voids, raked ceilings, above-kitchen windows — the ones nobody ever adjusts because they can't reach them.

Indoors and out

Bedrooms, living rooms and offices inside; patios, balconies and alfresco areas outside — all on the same system.

Smart home ready

Tie your blinds into the automations you already run — grouped, scheduled and voice-controlled where compatible.

Suits apartments

A popular upgrade in Gold Coast apartments and high-rises — battery and solar options mean no rewiring in many cases.

Custom Motorised Blinds Made for Your Home

Measured for your windows, not a box size.

Off-the-shelf and DIY motorised kits force your windows to suit the product. We do it the other way around: every blind is measured for your opening, then the motor is selected to match — the weight of the blind, the width of the window, whether there's power nearby, and how you want to control it.

You choose the fabric and colour; we specify the Motomate motor, power source and control method, and plan any smart home integration before a single thing is ordered. In practice that means picking between a 25mm and 35mm motor based on the width and weight of each blind — anything over about 2200mm wide generally needs the 35mm. Already have blinds you like? In many cases existing manual blinds can be converted to motorised — it depends on the brand, age and condition, so bring it up at the measure and we'll tell you honestly whether it's worth doing.

Remote Control, App Control, Timers and Voice Control

Five ways to run them.

Most homes end up using two or three of these together — a remote in the lounge, a schedule for the west-facing windows, and voice for everything else.

Remote control

The simplest option. Operate a single blind, a whole room, or grouped blinds together from one handset.

Wall switch

A fixed control point that never goes missing down the back of the couch — ideal for frequently used spaces.

App control

Add a Wi-Fi bridge and the free Connector App lets you group by room and control your blinds from anywhere.

Timers & scheduling

Set blinds to open and close at chosen times — or around sunrise and sunset — for privacy, light and heat management.

Voice control

Alexa and Google Home where compatible — hands full, blinds still move.

Which options are available comes down to the motor, hub and system you choose. We'll lay out what each combination can and can't do before you commit.

Motorised Blinds vs Manual Blinds

Be honest — do you need motors everywhere?

Both give you shade, privacy and light control. The difference is convenience, and it matters more in some rooms than others. Plenty of our jobs are a mix of the two.

Manual Blinds

Chain, cord, crank or hand-operated
  • Lower cost per window — stretch the budget further
  • Nothing to charge, wire or pair
  • Perfectly good for smaller, easy-to-reach windows
  • Best for low-use rooms — spare bedrooms, laundries

Motorised Blinds

Remote, switch, app, timer or voice
  • The only practical answer for high or hard-to-reach windows
  • Move many blinds at once instead of one at a time
  • Handles large, heavy blinds and wide sliding doors smoothly
  • No cords or chains — a safer choice around young children
  • Schedules and voice control for outdoor areas and bedrooms

Our usual advice: motorise the windows you'd never otherwise bother adjusting — the high ones, the big ones, the bedrooms and the outdoor screens — and keep manual where it genuinely doesn't matter. Compare the full roller blind range to see both side by side.

Local advice on the tech, not just the fabric.

Read more about us.

  • Motomate is our own brand

We know coastal homes, harsh western sun, high-rise apartments and outdoor living areas — because we work in them every week, not from a catalogue.

  • Custom motorisation solutions

Systems selected on blind type, window size, power source, room layout and how you prefer to control things — not whatever's easiest to order.

  • Professional installation & setup

Our own installers measure, fit, set the motor limits, pair your remotes and app, then walk you through it — no subcontractors, no "read the manual".

How much do motorised blinds cost?
It depends on the size of each blind, the blind type, the motor selected, the power source, how many blinds you're motorising, and whether you want smart home integration. Rather than quote a misleading "from" price, we measure your actual windows and give you a fixed written quote — free, and with no obligation.
Are motorised blinds suitable for large windows or sliding doors?
Yes — and this is where they make the biggest difference. Large blinds are heavy and awkward to operate by hand, so a motor turns a two-handed job into a button press. The important part is choosing a motor rated for the size and weight of the blind, which we specify as part of your quote.
Can motorised blinds be installed in apartments?
Yes, they're a popular apartment upgrade on the Gold Coast. Access, strata rules and available power can all affect the install — which is why battery-powered and solar-charged options are often the simplest route, since they avoid new wiring altogether. We check all of that at the measure before recommending anything.
What maintenance do motorised blinds need?
Very little. Keep the fabric and tracks clean and free of debris, recharge or replace batteries where applicable, and check everything runs smoothly. Two things to avoid: getting water directly on the motor, and pressing the remote buttons repeatedly — that can alter the motor's preset limits. See the Care + Maintenance tab above for the full rundown.
What happens if the power goes out?
It comes down to your power source. Battery-powered and solar-charged blinds keep working through a blackout as long as they're charged. Hardwired blinds won't operate until power returns. Either way, don't try to force the blind by hand — that can damage the motor. Give us a call and we'll sort it.
How do I choose the right motorised blind system?
The best option depends on your window size, whether the blind is indoors or outdoors, how you prefer to control it, your budget, and any smart home requirements. That's genuinely what the free measure is for — we work through all of it with you and recommend the combination that suits your home, not the most expensive one on the shelf.
How long do the batteries last?
A Motomate rechargeable battery motor gives you roughly 8 months on typical daily use — about one up-and-down cycle a day, or around 200 presses of the button. Recharging takes about 6 hours with a standard micro USB cable. If you'd rather never think about it, add a solar panel to keep the battery topped up, or go 240V hardwired instead.
What size motor do my blinds need?
Indoor blinds take either a 25mm or 35mm Motomate motor. As a general rule, anything over 2200mm wide needs the larger 35mm because of the extra size and weight. Outdoor blinds use the 35mm. You don't need to work this out yourself — we measure every window and specify the right motor for each blind as part of your quote.
