Frame options, what's inside the blades, what the material is made of, keeping them looking new, and what happens if something needs attention.
The frame is what makes a crooked window look straight.
This is the biggest practical difference between PVC and traditional timber shutters. With PVC, a frame is built inside your window reveal and the shutter panels hang from it. That frame is doing quiet, useful work: almost no window in a real house is perfectly square, and the frame lets the installer take up the difference so the finished shutter still reads clean and even.
Z-Frame
The Z-Frame features a single radius, a bit like a bullnose architrave — a simple profile that won’t date. The “Z” return is the deeper of the two, which makes it the better choice when a window is noticeably out of square, because there’s more of a lip to mask the gap.
L-Frame
If the Z-Frame doesn’t suit the look you’re after, the L-Frame is the other popular option. It’s a squarer, flatter profile that sits more discreetly against the reveal, and it can still be used to square up a window that isn’t quite true.

Why there’s aluminium inside a PVC shutter.
PVC is heavier than timber. That’s fine on a small bathroom window, but on a large panel that extra weight is exactly what causes sagging over time — a blade that droops at the tip, or a stile that bows just enough to stop the panel closing squarely. The fix is an aluminium core running through the components that carry the load.
Blades
On larger shutter panels the blades carry an aluminium core. It’s what stops a long louvre from bowing under its own weight, so the blades stay straight and keep closing flush against each other years down the track.
Stiles
The stiles — the vertical members that make up the panel frame — are reinforced the same way. This reduces weight relative to solid material while increasing the overall strength and rigidity of the panel, which is what keeps a tall shutter hanging true on its hinges.
It’s the kind of detail you never see and never think about, right up until a cheaper shutter starts to droop.
An extruded resin that behaves like painted timber.
Every component in a PVC shutter is made from an extruded resin that mimics the look and feel of painted timber. Up close, the blade profile, the frame and the finish all read the same way a painted timber shutter does — the difference only shows up in how the material behaves over time.

Everyday
- Dust along the louvres with a soft dry cloth, a feather duster or a vacuum brush attachment
- Tilt the louvres flat to get both faces in one pass
- Work along the panel rather than across it — faster, and kinder to the finish
When it needs more
- Wipe down with mild soap and water, then dry off with a clean cloth
- Unlike timber, PVC doesn’t mind getting properly wet — useful in a bathroom
- Use a soft brush around the frame, hinges and tilt rod where dust collects
Best avoided
- Harsh solvents, bleach or abrasive pads, which can dull the finish
- Forcing a panel that catches — check the hinges or track first, or book a service
